What does “rare” mean in this quiz?
There is no single line where a girl name suddenly becomes rare. For this quiz, “familiar but uncommon” means a published spelling ranked from about #301 to #1,000 in the 2025 U.S. data. “Outside the Top 1,000” goes farther from the mainstream, while “very rare” means fewer than 100 published girl births for the exact spelling that year.
Social Security does not publish a national name count when fewer than five babies of one sex received that spelling, so the public data cannot distinguish between zero and one to four births. That is why this quiz uses names with a published 2025 count rather than guessing below the privacy cutoff.
